SPINE - LOW BACK PAIN

Low Back Pain

As many as 9 out of every 10 persons will suffer from back pain at some point in their life. It is one of the most common reasons for visiting a doctor and causes more time missed from work than any other injury. For most people, the problem is short-lived and passes without the need for further medical attention.

Most back pain improves without a detailed diagnostic evaluation or specific treatment. However, back pain should be investigated if it lasts longer than a month, if the pain awakens you from sleep, if it radiates into the legs, or if there is weakness, loss of feeling, or loss of control with bowel or bladder function. Your back can be evaluated with x-rays, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), or a myelogram (a dye test combined with a CT).

Back pain is sometimes produced by an injured or degenerated disc.  The options to treat this condition include spinal fusion, conservative care, or no treatment.  Surgery is not typically considered for disc-related pain unless the pain has been severe for a prolonged period (typically over 6 months) and the patient has gone through non-operative treatments such as physical therapy, medication, and/or injections.

Most patients with back pain do not need an operation. Our team specializes in the management of complex spine disorders.
